Greco-Roman Period (5th Century BC – 5th Century AD): Known as *Euonymos* ("of good omen"), Panarea served as an important navigational point and trading outpost during Greek and Roman rule in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Pirate Raids & Depopulation (16th Century): Frequent corsair raids, including incursions led by Ottoman admiral Barbarossa, forced residents to abandon coastal settlements and flee inland to higher elevation for safety.
